Annual rose and gladiolus show at NBRI

Perk up your nose buds to feel the fragrance of roses. The National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) is organizing the annual Rose and Gladiolus Show at its lawns on January 19 and 20. A popular event on the NBRI calendar, the annual rose show attracts varied varieties of roses and gladioli from individual participants and public and private organizations.

The show will provide the visitors an opportunity to learn the art of cultivating some magnificent varieties of roses. The two-day show at NBRI lawns will showcase almost all varieties of roses and gladioli.

Roses enjoy a regal status among flowers on account of their beauty and fragrance. Even before the earth was inhabited by mankind, roses had already made their presence felt. Palaeo-botanical (fossil) evidences prove this point. The flower also found a special place with the Egyptian pharaohs, whose pyramids had roses buried along with the mummies. And during excavation, the essence of the flower was felt. In the present times, roses occupy the top slot in the floriculture industry.

The NBRI has been working on gladioli for past 25 years by way of germ-plasm collection, development of new varieties and standardization of agro-technology for commercial cultivation. tnnNBRI has developed about 20 new varieties of gladioli. The institute has also passed on the agro-technology for commercial cultivation of gladiolus to 2,000 progressive farmers. The visitors who come to the show also seek guidance to grow the flowers in their homes.
